Class D Fire Extinquishers

On June 22, 2006, the department placed into use two 35 pound Class D fire extinquishers.  Class D fire extinquishers are required to extinquish fires where combustible metals like magnesium, titanium, potassium and sodium are present.  These metals burn at high temperatures and give off enough oxygen to support burning.  This type fire extinquisher is required to extinquish many vehicle fires, especially hybrid vehicles which are becoming more common.
